Embracing the "Swipe World"

Role of evaluation and assessment is critical to all aspects of life, be it personal or professional, We as human beings are constantly evolving by implementing, taking feedback and reviewing. While for adults like us, it becomes the need based and self-motivating evolution, students especially in the age-group of 13 to 19 require hand-holding in streamlining the resources, abilities and talents they have.

Let’s take an example of mobile & internet, with almost 400 million users in India alone, it can be a powerful tool or a weapon if in wrong hands. How many of us are actually aware of the fact that we are carrying a “digital footprint device” with us all the time. What we surf on internet, the searches we make on google or games we play is recorded by the third party  and used to indulge us more into the same vicious circle.

What becomes imperative here is to guide our children timely and holistically.  And that can be done only when we as counselors, parents and community have a common goal i.e. a better social-emotional self-management training for our children.
Social-emotional learning (SEL),”  is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions” is used to develop discipline among students. It is a very promising approach that is able to reduce risky behaviours, increase desirable behaviours, brings emotional stability and thus results in promoting positive development.

To achieve this, we need to move towards blended learning, the learning process in which a student learns at least in part through delivery of content and instruction via digital and online media with some element of student control over time, place, path, or pace. We cannot deny the fact that technology has invaded our every aspect of life and the only option left with us is to embrace it. The future belongs to the “Swipe World”. To ensure that our students are keeping up the pace with the technology and self-management, let’s update our own software.
